Hospital Procedures Overview

As an oral surgeon, Dr. Rosenfeld performs more invasive surgical procedures in the hospital. Prior to the hospital surgery, Dr. Rosenfeld will meet with you for a consultation to evaluate you and make a diagnosis. Very frequently you will have an additional discussion appointment to discuss your treatment options and ask as many questions as you need to in order to feel comfortable and confident with your treatment plan.

What to expect at your consultation appointment

At your consultation, I spend a lot of time listening to you, examining you, and reviewing your history and radiographic imaging. I ask about your goals and objectives, since this is the most important element for me to understand, and it is of course unique to you. Once I have all of this information, I present your diagnosis to you and then explain your various treatment options. My goal is to help patients understand the different treatment options and choose the one that is right for them.

I will explain all of your options in terms of risks, benefits, outcomes, and recovery. I also clarify what are realistic expectations from each option. After carefully reviewing the advantages and potential risks, I will make my recommendation about what the right treatment is for you. But ultimately, you will decide. I encourage you to bring someone you trust to your consultation, so you can have them be a part of the discussion. At the end of your consultation, if you are ready, my staff will go over scheduling dates for your procedure, as well as fees and payment options. If you need more time, you are encouraged to do so. I would even encourage you to seek a second opinion. This is your face, and you must feel comfortable with your surgeon and your management plan.

The Presurgical Discussion

About a week before your surgery, we schedule a presurgical discussion. This is a time dedicated to review your surgery in detail, and answer all of your questions. We discuss post-operative course, post-operative instructions, and how to be well prepared. We review prescriptions and how to time medications so as to minimize side effects. And every surgical patient of mine can have comfort knowing that they will be able to reach me at any time in case of an emergency, day or night.
